"Recuerdos de Nopales" is an exploration of grief and its affect on memory.
When the people we love die, we feel uprooted and lost. To portray this sense of haziness, I used a veil to impair my vision.
The cactus/ nopal symbolizes unconditional love that survives through harsh conditions. Their familiar thorny teardrop shape embodies memories that are often too painful to recall.
Even when our minds repress memories, our emotions remain. With time and acceptance of loss, memories come back to us. Ancestral knowledge is woven into memory within our bodies and minds.
To symbolize the ever present yet changing sadness, I surrounded myself with blue materials varying in weight and shade. Sadness can alter the way we appear and to express that, I painted my eyebrows blue.
